The Ducati Diavel wins the Good Design Award

What is the Good Design Award?

Every year from 1950 the International Museum of Architecture and Design of Chicago Athenaeum releases an award for the most innovative, cutting-edge industrial product, and graphic designs produced around the world. 40,000 were awarded from 1950 till today including the Boeing 787 Dreamliner or the NASA Spaceship.

Why the XDiavel?

The Ducati XDiavel is a bike that changed with the time, I’d almost say it grew up with the time. In the beginning was a new concept for Ducati, it was something between a cruiser and a naked bike. But with a couple of changes in the new model, it took a full step becoming a cruiser, a sporty one but still a cruiser. Probably it was a decision taken while aiming at the American market.

It’s easy to understand why they chose the XDiavel. It couldn’t be a sports bike in my opinion because the shape and the aerodynamics have a vital function. Everything is there to serve speed. But on a cruiser, the design is there to serve the emotions and feelings. This gave the freedom the designer needed to shape such a bike.
